Sails
A sail is a large piece of fabric or material mounted on a ship’s mast that captures the wind's energy. By catching the wind, sails generate force that propels the ship forward across the water. Different types of sails and their arrangements allow sailors to control the vessel’s speed and direction. Essentially, sails act as the ship’s wind-powered engine, enabling movement without engines or fuel, using natural wind to efficiently and sustainably navigate the seas.
