Safavid Navy
The Safavid Navy was the naval force of the Safavid Empire (1501–1736), based primarily in Persia (modern Iran). It played a key role in defending the empire’s coastline along the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea, controlling trade routes and defending against regional rivals. The navy included ships like galleys and later sailboats, and employed skilled sailors and shipsmiths. Although not as large as the Ottoman or European navies, the Safavid Navy was vital for regional security, asserting Persian influence in maritime affairs, and protecting the empire’s economic interests from invasions and piracy.
