Sabatier theory describes a chemical reaction where hydrogen gas (H₂) reacts with carbon dioxide (CO₂) on a catalyst, typically nickel, to produce methane (CH₄) and water. This process, known as the Sabatier reaction, is important for space exploration and sustainable energy because it allows the conversion of available gases—like CO₂ from the atmosphere or habitats—into useful fuel (methane). Essentially, it provides a way to generate fuel using resources that are accessible in different environments, supporting tasks like refueling spacecraft or producing sustainable energy on Earth.
