S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a large American Great Lakes freighter that transported iron ore. Launched in 1958, it was one of the biggest ships on the lakes. On November 10, 1975, during a fierce storm, it sank suddenly in Lake Superior, resulting in the loss of all 29 crew members. Its sinking remains one of the most famous maritime disasters on the Great Lakes, highlighting the dangers of shipping in severe weather. The ship’s story is well-known partly due to songs and documentaries that remember its tragic end and the harsh conditions faced by Great Lakes sailors.
