Ryukyu Kingdom
The Ryukyu Kingdom was an independent kingdom that existed from the 15th to the 19th century on the Ryukyu Islands, now part of Japan. Known for its vibrant maritime trade, it served as a cultural and commercial bridge between China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. The kingdom developed a unique culture, language, and arts, including traditional dance and music. In 1609, it was invaded by Japan's Satsuma Domain but maintained a degree of autonomy until it was formally annexed by Japan in 1879, becoming Okinawa Prefecture. Its history reflects a rich blend of regional influences and maritime prowess.
