Þrymskviða

Þrymskviða is an Old Norse poem from the Poetic Edda that tells the story of the gods’ theft of Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, by the giant Þrym. To retrieve it, Thor disguises himself as the goddess Freyja and goes to the giant’s hall. Þrym unknowingly agrees to give back Mjölnir in exchange for Freyja’s hand in marriage. However, Thor’s true identity is revealed when he, as a disguised goddess, easily retrieves his hammer and defeats the giants. The poem combines humor, heroism, and Norse mythological elements, highlighting themes of cleverness and the importance of strength.
