Russian aristocracy

The Russian aristocracy, or nobility, was a social class of wealthy landowners and influential families in Russia, particularly prominent from the 17th century until the early 20th century. They held significant power, owning vast estates and enjoying privileges granted by the monarchy, such as tax exemptions and political influence. The nobility played a crucial role in Russia's governance, military, and culture, contributing to arts and education. However, their power diminished after the 1917 Russian Revolution, which sought to abolish feudal systems and promote equality, ultimately leading to widespread confiscation of aristocratic properties and the establishment of a communist regime.
