Russian America

Russian America was the period from 1733 to 1867 when Russia established a colonial presence in North America, primarily along Alaska's coast. The Russian Empire exploited local fur resources, especially sea otters, establishing trading posts and settlements. It was the largest Russian venture in the New World, motivated by economic interests and expansion. In 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million, ending Russian control. Today, Russian influence remains evident in Alaska’s history and place names.
