Ruffs are a type of bird belonging to the same family as storks and herons. They are known for their striking breeding plumage—long, ruffled neck feathers and colorful, elaborate patterns that males display to attract females during the mating season. Outside of breeding time, their plumage is more subdued. Ruffs typically live in wetlands, marshes, and shallow lakes across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Their ruffled necks and elaborate feathers play a key role in courtship displays, making them easily recognizable and a fascinating example of avian reproductive behavior.
