Ruby-throated Hummingbird

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a small, vibrant bird native to eastern North America. Recognizable by its iridescent green back and bright red throat patch, it measures about 3 to 3.5 inches long. These birds are exceptional at hovering in mid-air thanks to rapid wing beats, allowing them to feed on nectar from flowers using a specialized, extendable tongue. They play a vital role in pollination and are also known for their impressive migration, traveling up to 600 miles nonstop to winter in Central America. Despite their tiny size, they are powerful fliers and highly active, often darting quickly from flower to flower.
