Rossian Ethics

Rossian ethics, developed by philosopher W.D. Ross, is a moral theory that emphasizes a set of principles called "prima facie duties." These duties—such as honesty, justice, and beneficence—are initial moral obligations we recognize. When conflicts arise, we weigh these duties to determine the right action, rather than following a single rule. The approach highlights moral intuition and flexibility, suggesting we have multiple responsibilities that guide our decisions, but none are absolute. Overall, it promotes thoughtful judgment in ethical decision-making, respecting the complexity of moral life.
