Ross Dependency
The Ross Dependency is a region of Antarctica claimed by New Zealand. It includes the area around the Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea, extending from 160° east to 150° west longitude. These territorial claims are based on historic exploration and have limited international recognition, as Antarctica is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, which emphasizes scientific cooperation and environmental protection. The Ross Dependency hosts research stations and is largely designated for scientific research rather than commercial activity. It remains a symbol of New Zealand’s historic involvement in Antarctic exploration and research initiatives.
