RORγt
RORγt (Retinoic Acid Receptor-related Orphan Receptor gamma t) is a protein that acts as a master regulator in the immune system, specifically guiding the development of a type of immune cell called Th17 cells. These cells produce certain chemicals that help defend against bacteria and fungi, especially at mucous membranes like the gut and lungs. RORγt essentially switches on genes necessary for Th17 cell formation and function. Proper regulation of RORγt is important for maintaining immune defense, but if unbalanced, it can contribute to inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
