ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity)
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a condition that affects the eyes of premature infants. It occurs when blood vessels in the retina—the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye—develop abnormally. This abnormal growth can lead to scarring and, in severe cases, loss of vision or blindness. ROP is more common in babies born very early or with very low birth weights because their blood vessels are still developing. Early screening and treatment can help prevent serious vision problems, making timely medical care crucial for at-risk infants.
