Roman military structure
The Roman military was organized like a sophisticated team, with units of varying size and responsibility. The core was the legions, each made up of around 4,000 to 6,000 soldiers divided into smaller groups called centuries (about 80 men). Several centuries formed a cohort, and multiple cohorts made up a legion. Commanded by a legate, the legions were supported by specialized units like cavalry. This structure allowed the Romans to efficiently deploy, manage, and adapt their forces across different terrains and campaigns, enabling them to sustain one of the most effective armies in ancient history.
