Roger Schutz (Brother Roger)

Brother Roger, born Roger Schutz in 1915, was a Swiss Protestant monk and founder of the Taizé Community, an ecumenical monastic brotherhood dedicated to prayer, reconciliation, and social service. Influenced by a desire to promote unity among Christian denominations, he established Taizé in France in 1940. The community is known for its contemplative prayer, simple living, and fostering dialogue among different faiths and cultures. Brother Roger’s leadership emphasized reconciliation, peace, and understanding, inspiring thousands globally. He was tragically killed in 2005 during a church service, and his legacy continues through Taizé’s ongoing mission.
