RNVR (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve)
The Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) was a reserve branch of the Royal Navy, composed of civilian volunteers who trained part-time to support naval operations. Established in 1903, RNVR members received naval training and could be called upon during war or emergencies to augment regular forces. Their roles included ship crewing, communications, and various support functions. The RNVR provided a flexible reserve force, enabling the Royal Navy to expand rapidly when needed, while allowing volunteers to maintain civilian careers. Over time, it evolved into the Royal Naval Reserve, blending volunteer and full-time personnel.
