Risk Factors for VAP

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) risk factors are conditions or situations that increase the chance of developing lung infection while on a ventilator. These include having a long duration of ventilation, weakened immune system, underlying lung diseases, prior episodes of pneumonia, or difficulty clearing secretions from the lungs. Invasive devices like the breathing tube can introduce bacteria, and poor hygiene or care practices can also raise risk. Additionally, other factors such as older age, multiple health problems, or the use of certain medications can contribute. Recognizing these factors helps in preventing and managing VAP effectively.
