Richard C. Roberts

Richard C. Roberts is an American biochemist who is best known for discovering how to cut and splice DNA molecules precisely, a key technique called recombinant DNA technology. This breakthrough has revolutionized genetics, allowing scientists to modify genes for medical, agricultural, and scientific purposes. Roberts was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993, sharing it with Paul L. Modrich and Aziz Sancar. His work has paved the way for advances such as genetic testing, produced insulin through genetically engineered bacteria, and enhanced our understanding of DNA's functions.
