Revolt of 1859

The Revolt of 1859 was an uprising by Indian soldiers in the British East India Company’s army, mainly in Meerut and Delhi. They were unhappy with British policies, especially restrictions on military practices and cultural insensitivity. This rebellion quickly spread across northern India, challenging British authority. Although it was eventually suppressed, it marked a significant moment in Indian resistance, leading to the end of the East India Company’s rule and the beginning of direct British government control over India in 1858. The revolt is seen as a catalyst for the broader Indian independence movement.
