Retrovirus classification

Retroviruses are a group of viruses characterized by their unique ability to reverse the usual flow of genetic information. Unlike most viruses, which inject DNA into a host, retroviruses carry their genetic material as RNA. Once inside a host cell, they use an enzyme called reverse transcriptase to convert their RNA into DNA, which then integrates into the host's genome. This integration allows the virus to replicate as the host cell divides. Retroviruses are classified mainly into families like Lentiviruses (which includes HIV), Spumaviruses, and Oncoviruses, based on their genetic properties and effects on the host.
