Retroviral gene therapy
Retroviral gene therapy uses modified viruses called retroviruses to deliver healthy genetic material into a patient's cells. These viruses are engineered to carry beneficial genes and are designed to insert their genetic payload into the DNA of the target cells, typically stem cells. Once integrated, the healthy genes can correct genetic disorders or improve cell function. This approach is often used to treat conditions like certain genetic immune deficiencies. While effective, it requires careful control to avoid unintended effects, such as disrupting other genes or causing unintended mutations.
