RET protein
RET is a gene that produces a protein called a receptor, which is located on the surface of certain cells. This receptor acts like an antenna, detecting specific signals (such as growth factors) outside the cell and transmitting them inside. This process helps control important functions like cell growth, development, and survival. When RET functions normally, it maintains healthy cell activity, but if it mutates or becomes overactive, it can lead to uncontrolled cell growth, contributing to certain cancers like medullary thyroid carcinoma and some nerve-related tumors.
