Restrictive Lung Disease
Restrictive lung disease refers to conditions that make the lungs less able to expand fully, resulting in decreased lung volume and capacity. This impairs the ability to take in enough oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide efficiently. Causes include diseases that stiffen the lung tissue, such as fibrosis, or issues affecting the chest wall, muscles, or nerves, like scoliosis or neuromuscular disorders. Symptoms often include shortness of breath, especially during exertion, and a cough. Diagnosis involves lung function tests, imaging, and clinical evaluation. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause and improving breathing capacity.
