Respiratory Bronchiolitis

Respiratory bronchiolitis is a condition characterized by inflammation and accumulation of pigmented macrophages (immune cells) in the small airways of the lungs known as respiratory bronchioles. It commonly occurs in smokers and involves changes in the airway lining, leading to symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, and occasional sputum production. The condition is often diagnosed through imaging and lung biopsies, and quitting smoking can help prevent its progression. While usually mild and reversible, continued exposure to irritants can worsen lung damage.
