resocialization
Resocialization is the process of learning new norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors to adapt to a different social environment or role. It often occurs when individuals enter new institutions like the military, prison, or rehab centers, or after significant life changes such as divorce or migration. During resocialization, existing behaviors and beliefs are replaced or modified to align with the new social context. This process helps individuals integrate successfully into their new environment, ensuring they understand and conform to new expectations while often shedding previous patterns that no longer apply.
