Research on decompression sickness
Decompression sickness, often referred to as "the bends," occurs when a diver ascends too quickly after spending time at depths. At high pressures, nitrogen from the air becomes dissolved in the body’s tissues. Rapid ascent reduces pressure, causing nitrogen to form bubbles in the bloodstream and tissues. This can lead to symptoms like joint pain, dizziness, and even life-threatening conditions. Research focuses on understanding the physiological processes involved, improving dive practices, enhancing safety protocols, and developing effective treatments, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which helps eliminate the nitrogen bubbles and alleviate symptoms.
