Republican Government of Spain

The Republican Government of Spain was the early democratic government established after the abolition of the monarchy in 1931, following the abdication of King Alfonso XIII. It aimed to promote democratic principles, civil rights, and reforms, including land redistribution and secularization. The government faced deep political polarization and social tensions, ultimately leading to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The civil war ended with the victory of Francisco Franco's authoritarian regime, which ruled Spain until his death in 1975. The republic represents a period of democratic experimentation and significant social change in Spain’s modern history.
