Republic of Texas
The Republic of Texas was an independent nation that existed from 1836 to 1845, following Texas’s declaration of independence from Mexico. It was formed after the Texas Revolution, during which settlers in Texas fought for self-rule. During its existence, Texas had its own government, military, and postal system. In 1845, Texas joined the United States as the 28th state. The republic’s brief independence is a significant part of Texas history, reflecting its unique cultural identity and its moments of asserting sovereignty before becoming part of the U.S.
