Republic of Genoa
The Republic of Genoa was a powerful maritime state centered around the city of Genoa in Italy, existing roughly from the 11th to 18th centuries. It was an independent political entity governed by a doge and a complex system of councils, notable for its extensive trade networks, banking, and naval strength. Genoa played a key role in Mediterranean commerce, establishing colonies and trading posts across the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Its influence declined in the late 18th century, eventually becoming part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and later Italy. The republic was a significant center of economic, political, and cultural activity during its existence.
