Rent Party
A rent party is a social gathering held primarily in African American communities during the early to mid-20th century, designed to raise money for rent payments. Hosts would throw a party—often with music, dancing, and food—to generate funds to cover overdue rent or mortgage costs. These events fostered community bonding and cultural expression while providing practical financial support for residents facing economic difficulties. Rent parties became a creative solution to housing insecurity and a significant part of cultural history, especially within Harlem and similar neighborhoods.
