Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS)

The Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) is a hormone system that regulates blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. When blood pressure drops, the kidneys release an enzyme called renin. This triggers the conversion of a protein in the blood into angiotensin II, which narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure. Angiotensin II also encourages the release of aldosterone from the adrenal glands, prompting the kidneys to retain sodium and water, further increasing blood volume and pressure. RAAS is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health and responding to blood pressure changes.
