Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs)
Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) are credits used to track and verify the production and blending of renewable fuels like ethanol and biodiesel. They are generated when these fuels are made and serve as legal proof that a certain amount of renewable fuel has been blended into the transportation fuel supply. Obligated parties, such as fuel refiners and importers, must acquire enough RINs to meet renewable fuel mandates set by regulations like the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). RINs can be bought and sold, creating a market that incentivizes the production and blending of renewable fuels while ensuring compliance with environmental policies.
