renal medulla
The renal medulla is the inner part of the kidney, located beneath the outer cortex. It consists of cone-shaped structures called renal pyramids, which contain tiny tubes that help concentrate urine. The medulla plays a key role in regulating water and salt balance in the body by processing the filtrate from the blood, ultimately producing concentrated urine to maintain proper hydration and electrolyte levels. It works closely with the cortex to filter blood, remove waste, and control fluid and mineral levels.
