Remnant ablation

Remnant ablation is a treatment used after thyroid cancer surgery to destroy any remaining cancerous thyroid tissue or cells. This is typically done using a small amount of radioactive iodine (radioiodine), which the remaining thyroid cells absorb. The radioactive iodine then destroys these leftover cells, reducing the chance of cancer recurrence. The procedure is effective because thyroid tissue naturally takes up iodine, allowing targeted treatment without affecting most other body tissues. It’s a common, safe approach to ensure thorough treatment and improve long-term outcomes for thyroid cancer patients.
