Rembrandt Research Project

The Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) is an academic initiative that started in 1968 to examine, authenticate, and study the works of the Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. Its goal is to accurately attribute paintings to the artist, differentiate genuine works from later copies or forgeries, and deepen understanding of his technique and development. By analyzing individual paintings using scientific methods and historical research, the RRP has revised many previous attributions, sometimes reclassifying works as not by Rembrandt. The project has significantly advanced the scholarship and appreciation of Rembrandt’s oeuvre, fostering greater clarity and scholarship in the art world.
