Reinke's Edema

Reinke’s Edema is a condition where the vocal cords develop swelling due to fluid accumulation in the superficial layer of the vocal fold tissue, called Reinke’s space. This often results from chronic vocal strain, smoking, or irritation, leading to a thickened, swollen appearance of the cords. The swelling causes the voice to sound hoarse, breathy, or low in pitch, and can make speaking difficult. Treatment typically involves voice rest, addressing the underlying causes like smoking cessation, and in some cases, surgical removal of the excess fluid to restore normal voice quality.
