Regulatory Focus Theory

Regulatory Focus Theory suggests that people are motivated by different kinds of goals: some prioritize dreams, aspirations, and growth (promotion focus), seeking positive outcomes; others concentrate on safety, responsibilities, and avoiding mistakes (prevention focus). These motivational orientations influence how individuals approach situations, make decisions, and behave. For example, a promotion-focused person may pursue opportunities enthusiastically, while a prevention-focused individual might be more cautious and risk-averse. Recognizing these tendencies helps us understand why people respond differently to similar circumstances and can guide effective communication and goal-setting strategies.
