Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs)
Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) are responsible for operating and coordinating the electrical grid across large regions of the United States. They ensure the reliable, efficient delivery of electricity by managing the flow across high-voltage transmission lines, balancing supply and demand, and facilitating competitive electricity markets. RTOs work with utilities and power generators to plan for future capacity and maintain system stability. Their goal is to enhance grid reliability, promote fair pricing, and support integration of renewable energy sources, all while operating independently from any single utility or company in their region.
