reflux disease

Reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when stomach acid flows backward into the esophagus—the tube connecting your mouth and stomach. This happens because the lower esophageal sphincter, a ring of muscle that normally keeps acid contained, weakens or relaxes improperly. The result can be symptoms like heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest, sore throat, and sometimes regurgitation of acid or food. Chronic reflux may lead to complications such as inflammation or damage to the esophagus. Managing reflux often involves lifestyle changes, medications, and in some cases, medical procedures.
