Reed Smoot
Reed Smoot was an American senator from Utah, serving from 1903 to 1933. He was also an ordained leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). His election to the Senate sparked controversy because of allegations that he used church influence to gain political power, raising questions about the separation of church and state. His election was challenged, leading to a lengthy Senate investigation. Ultimately, Smoot was permitted to serve, but the controversy highlighted tensions between religious influence and government authority in early 20th-century America.
