redox chemistry

Redox chemistry involves reactions where electrons are transferred between substances. "Redox" combines "reduction" (gain of electrons) and "oxidation" (loss of electrons). When one substance loses electrons (oxidation), another gains them (reduction). This process is fundamental to many reactions, such as in batteries generating electricity, metabolism in the body producing energy, or corrosion of metals. The transfer of electrons changes the oxidation states of the involved substances, driving chemical changes that are essential to natural and technological processes.
