red wolves
Red wolves are a species of canid native to the southeastern United States. They are larger than coyotes but smaller than gray wolves, typically weighing between 45 to 80 pounds. Red wolves have a distinctive reddish-brown coat and long legs, adapted for their habitat. Once on the brink of extinction, they are now part of ongoing conservation efforts. They primarily hunt small to medium-sized animals, like rabbits and deer. A 1987 recovery program has helped reintroduce them to the wild, but they still face threats from habitat loss and hybridization with coyotes.
