Red List Categories
The Red List Categories are a classification system used to assess the conservation status of plant and animal species. Managed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), these categories indicate how threatened a species is. They include "Least Concern," "Near Threatened," "Vulnerable," "Endangered," "Critically Endangered," "Extinct in the Wild," and "Extinct." Each category reflects the species’ risk of extinction, based on factors like population size, habitat loss, and environmental changes. The Red List helps prioritize conservation efforts to protect biodiversity and inform policy decisions.
