Red-figure

Red-figure is an ancient Greek pottery technique used for decorating vases. In this style, the background is painted black, leaving the figures in the natural red color of the clay. Artists used a careful process of painting the background and then carving out fine details to reveal the red clay beneath. This method allowed for greater detail and realism in depictions of people, animals, and scenes compared to earlier styles. Red-figure pottery became popular around 520 BCE and remained a dominant style for centuries, showcasing the Greeks’ skill in artistry and storytelling through ceramic art.
