Red blood cell compatibility
Red blood cell compatibility refers to how well a blood transfusion will work between donor and recipient. It depends on specific markers called antigens on the surface of red blood cells, mainly the ABO and Rh systems. If these antigens match or are compatible, the recipient's immune system won't attack the transfused blood. If they’re incompatible, the immune system may recognize the transfused blood as foreign and cause a reaction, which can be dangerous. Therefore, blood typing and screening ensure that donor blood is compatible with the recipient, reducing the risk of complications during transfusions.
