recurrent CDI
Recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (recurrent CDI) occurs when an individual who has recovered from an initial C. difficile infection experiences one or more new episodes of the infection. This happens because the bacteria can persist in the gut or the infection can reappear after treatment, especially if the balance of good and bad bacteria in the intestines is disrupted. Recurrent CDI is common and can cause symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Managing it often involves specific antibiotics, sometimes additional treatments like fecal microbiota transplant, to restore healthy bacteria and prevent further recurrences.
