Rebellion of 1867

The Rebellion of 1867 was a brief uprising in the Red River Settlement, mainly involving Métis people and some settlers, against the federal government of Canada. They were upset because they wanted to protect their rights, land, and way of life amid growing Canadian expansion and policies they felt threatened their interests. The rebellion, led by Louis Riel, aimed to establish their own government and secure recognition of their cultural and land rights. It ended quickly when Canadian authorities suppressed the uprising, leading to the establishment of Manitoba as a province with protections for Métis people.
