Rangelands

Rangelands are vast areas of land that are primarily used for grazing livestock like cattle and sheep, as well as for wildlife habitats. They include grasslands, shrublands, savannas, and open woodlands, often with sparse vegetation. Rangelands are not heavily cultivated but are vital for agriculture, biodiversity, and ecosystem services such as water filtration and carbon storage. They cover about half of the world's land area and are managed to balance livestock production with conservation, preventing overgrazing and land degradation. These regions play a critical role in sustaining both local communities and global ecological health.
