RAI (Radioactive iodine) therapy
Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is a treatment used primarily for thyroid conditions, such as certain types of thyroid cancer or overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). It involves swallowing a small amount of radioactive iodine that is absorbed mainly by the thyroid gland. The radioactivity selectively destroys overactive or cancerous thyroid cells without harming most other tissues. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis, and patients may need to follow specific safety guidelines afterward to limit radiation exposure to others. RAI therapy can effectively reduce or eliminate abnormal thyroid activity, improving health and reducing the risk of cancer recurrence.
